The modules presented here provide an introduction to the archaeology of the ancient city of the Caesarea Maritima. The purpose of the modules is to place the student in the role of a volunteer archaeologist who will travel abroad and assist professional archaeologists in their work at Caesarea.  A series of lesson plans accompany the modules, which have been designed to provide a more complete experience in the history and archaeology of ancient communities.

There are a total of six modules, and the details of each are discussed below:   We encourage you to explore each module in the sequence given.

  • Module 1 provides an introduction to the history of the ancient city of Caesarea. It gives students the necessary historical background to understand and interpret the archaeological evidence from Caesarea.
  • Module 2 provides an overview of the preparations required to join an archaeological excavation in a foreign country. The lesson will be set within the context of having the students explore the current political, economic, and cultural affairs of the host country.  The objective is to have the students pay special attention to the health risks associated with foreign travel as well as the local customs, culture, and society.  As archaeologists in a foreign country, students should be aware that they serve as "ambassadors" of their home country abroad. • Module 3 provides an overview of ancient site of Caesarea as it exists today. Students will tour the site with the excavation director and learn about its history based on the existing monuments.  Students will learn where at the site that the excavation director has decided to excavate and why.
  • Module 4 provides the students with a brief overview of the archaeological concept of stratigraphy.  This module provides the necessary context for understanding the significance of the material culture retrieved from the excavations.
  • Module 5 details the significance of many of the items of material culture that students can expect to find during their work at Caesarea.
  • Module 6 is simply a short digression on the issues presented within each of the previous modules.  This module is set within the context of giving students "Things to Ponder" about the excavations at Caesarea and their role as archaeologists.
